Friends and Fables Review 2026: An Honest Hands On Look at the AI Game Master for D&D and Tabletop RPGs
Friends and Fables is one of the most feature complete AI Game Masters we've reviewed to date. It runs D&D 5e SRD inspired campaigns in the browser with an AI Game Master named Franz, and it stacks worldbuilding tools, battlemaps, character sheets, image generation, and multiplayer for up to six players on top. In this review we cover what it does well, where it gets rough, what it costs, who it suits, and how it compares to the wider field of AI Game Masters, including DungeonsDeep.ai, which we build. We spent time in the product ourselves, and every factual claim below is checked against Friends and Fables' own documentation and independent reviews, linked throughout.

The Quick Verdict
- What it is: Friends and Fables is a browser based AI tabletop RPG platform where an AI Game Master named Franz runs D&D 5e SRD inspired campaigns, with worldbuilding tools, battlemaps, and multiplayer built in.
- Best for: groups. If you have two to five friends and no Game Master, its shared campaigns and "friends play free" model are a real draw.
- Rating in one line: a genuinely ambitious feature set, held back by early access rough edges, combat that is currently being reworked, and the memory drift that comes with any language model run game.
- Free to try: yes, up to 25 turns a day with 3 player campaigns, then paid plans from $19.95 to $39.95 a month.
- Worth comparing against: DungeonsDeep.ai, which is also free to try and takes a different approach: campaigns authored by human writers and a dedicated rules engine that enforces combat in code. Adventures written by humans. Run by Artificial Intelligence.
What Friends and Fables Is
Friends and Fables (found at fables.gg) is made by Side Quest Labs, a small indie studio founded by Will Liu and David Melnychuk, and their docs describe it as the world's first generative tabletop roleplaying game inspired by DnD 5e. In practice that means you create or pick a world, build a character on a real character sheet, and play campaigns run by Franz, the AI Game Master, either solo or with friends. It uses the SRD 5.1 ruleset under Creative Commons rather than licensed D&D content, so the right way to describe it is 5e inspired, not official D&D. The scope is the headline. Where most AI story tools give you a chat window, Friends and Fables gives you a chat window plus maps, tokens, quests, inventory, factions, lore entries, an image studio, and a worldbuilding suite. It is trying to be the whole table in one product, and it is still labeled early access beta while it gets there.
Hands On: What Playing Feels Like
We spent time playing on the platform before writing this, and the first impression is strong. Franz opens with atmospheric, well paced narration, the battlemap on the right tracks your position in the scene, and the character panel keeps HP, XP, and stats one glance away. You type what your character says or does, Franz narrates the outcome, and a Continue mode lets the story roll forward when you just want to see what happens next.
The interface is genuinely impressive and genuinely busy. Chat, map, world tab, characters, quests, and settings all live on one screen, and the independent DreamGen review made the same observation we did: it is information heavy and takes some learning, especially if you have never played a tabletop RPG before. Players coming from a virtual tabletop like Roll20 will feel at home faster than players coming from a chat app.
Rules, Dice, and Combat
Friends and Fables supports tactical 5e style combat with initiative, HP tracking, battlemaps, and tokens, driven either by natural language commands or an Attack Panel where Franz detects your weapon, spell, and target. That is more combat structure than almost any chat first competitor. Source: the Friends and Fables combat docs.
The honest caveats come from those same docs and from play. The rules still run through the language model, and it shows. In our own session, Franz let us roll a d4 for a Perception check, then apologized and asked for the d20 after we questioned it. The interface itself displays a tip warning that Franz might make mistakes when generating NPCs, areas, and locations, and recommends undoing or editing events to keep the context accurate.
Two bigger flags for combat focused players. First, the docs state that combat encounters are currently off by default while the team revamps the combat system, though you can switch them back on. Source: the Gamemaster Settings doc. Second, the narrative combat mode may not track enemies and stats accurately by the docs' own admission, and DreamGen's testing hit a fight where Franz treated a creature as dead and alive at the same time and the session could not cleanly recover. None of this is unusual for language model refereed combat, but it is the part of the product to test hardest during your free turns.
Worldbuilding and Maps
This is where Friends and Fables is at its strongest. The worldbuilding suite covers custom worlds, region and local maps, areas, points of interest, NPCs, monsters, items, spells, factions, quests, races, classes, and structured lore, and you can "lore dump" setting material so Franz can draw on it during play. The world map view pins every location in your setting, and the tools are free to use and export even if you play elsewhere. Source: fables.gg/tools.
If your favorite part of the hobby is building the world, populating it with factions, and then playing inside it, few AI Game Masters we've tried offer worldbuilding this deep. It is the feature area reviewers and Product Hunt commenters praise most consistently, alongside the map generation. Source: Product Hunt.
Memory and Context
Franz is not one model with one context window. The platform automatically creates memories every five turns and retrieves the relevant ones into a Working Context, and you can pin information manually or pull specific entities into a scene with @mentions. The docs are upfront that not every memory is always included, because of cost and performance tradeoffs, and mention limits scale with your pricing tier: one per message on Free, up to five on the top plan. Sources: the Memories doc and fables.gg/pricing.
In practice, this is better memory tooling than a raw chatbot, and it still drifts. DreamGen reports users hitting Franz memory issues in extended campaigns, especially on lower tiers. That pattern is not unique to Friends and Fables; it is the structural tradeoff of retrieval based memory, and we broke down why it happens across the whole category in why AI Game Masters forget your campaign.
Multiplayer: The Headline Feature
Multiplayer is the thing Friends and Fables does that few others in the AI GM space do this well. Campaigns support up to 3 players on the Free plan and up to 6 on the top tier, play works asynchronously across desktop, tablet, and mobile browsers, and, crucially, your friends play free under the host's subscription. One person pays, the whole table plays. DreamGen calls multiplayer the standout strength and notes Franz balances the narrative between players well. Sources: fables.gg/pricing and the DreamGen review.
The flip side of "friends play free" is that the host's credits carry the table, and DreamGen criticizes exactly that: only the host spends credits in multiplayer, and turn based combat burned credits two to three times faster than narrative play in their test. If you host a weekly group, budget for it.
Models, Images, and Audio
Franz runs on a mixture of models depending on the task, including Gemini, Llama, GPT, Grok, and custom fine tuned models, and you can pick between narration models, some of which are premium and cost credits per turn. Image generation is a full feature area of its own: in game scene illustrations plus an Image Studio for portraits, item art, maps, covers, and editing, again split between free and premium credit priced models. Text to speech narration is included on paid tiers. Sources: What models do you use?, Available LLM Models, and Using the Image Studio.
Pricing and Plans
Verified against the official pricing page on July 6, 2026. Source: fables.gg/pricing.
| Plan | Price | Turns | Players | Extras |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 25 per day | Up to 3 | 1 mention per message |
| Starter | $19.95/mo | Unlimited standard | Up to 4 | TTS, 100 credits/mo |
| Pro | $29.95/mo | Unlimited standard | Up to 5 | TTS, 300 credits/mo |
| Legend | $39.95/mo | Unlimited standard | Up to 6 | TTS, 600 credits/mo |
Three things to know before subscribing. "Unlimited standard turns" is real, but premium narration models and premium image models draw from your credit balance, so heavy use of the nicest models is metered. Friends can always play free on the host's plan, which makes the effective per player price excellent for groups. And the pricing page itself carries the early access warning to expect bugs, incomplete features, and game breaking changes, which is honest and worth taking at face value.
For context, the $19.95 entry tier costs about the same as a general AI subscription like ChatGPT Plus, more than NovelAI's $10 entry tier, and it buys a purpose built RPG platform rather than a general assistant. Friends and Fables is not competing on price. It is competing on being the whole table.
Where Friends and Fables Wins Right Now
- Multiplayer. Up to six players, asynchronous, cross device, and friends play free. Few others in the AI GM field treat group play this seriously.
- Worldbuilding depth. Maps, factions, lore, custom classes and races, exportable tools. A genuine strength for builders.
- Feature breadth. Character sheets, battlemaps, quests, image studio, TTS, model choice: it is one of the most complete single packages in the category.
- Development pace. The 2025 patch history shipped Franz 2.0, Combat V4, Memories V2, quests, a world map builder, and more. The team is small and moves fast. Source: fables.gg/patch-notes.
Where Friends and Fables Struggles
- Combat reliability. Encounters are off by default mid rework, narrative combat can lose track of enemy stats, and the model occasionally fumbles basic dice procedure, as it did in our session.
- Memory drift on long campaigns. Retrieval based memory means details fall out of context, and reports say it bites hardest on lower tiers.
- Credit economy friction. Premium models and images are metered, combat burns credits faster, and the host pays for the whole table.
- Interface complexity. Powerful, but a lot of screen for a new player to decode.
- Locked to 5e style play. It bends to homebrew, but testing found it does not support systems incompatible with 5e style stats and classes.
- Beta polish. The pricing page's own warning stands: bugs and breaking changes are part of the deal today.
What About Craft?
In May 2026 the team announced Craft, a second product aimed at deeper control over worlds, systems, files, and rules. The announcement states directly that Friends and Fables is not being sunset and will remain the accessible, unlimited 5e style AI Game Master experience while Craft serves power users. If you were holding off because you thought the product was being replaced, that is not what the team says is happening. Source: the Craft announcement.
Where DungeonsDeep.ai Was Built Differently
Friends and Fables and DungeonsDeep.ai are aimed at the same problem, playing D&D and tabletop RPGs without needing a human Game Master, but we made different bets on how to solve it.
Friends and Fables bets on generative breadth: Franz improvises campaigns in worlds you or the community build, and the platform gives you tools to steer him. We built DungeonsDeep.ai around the opposite bet: adventures written by humans, run by Artificial Intelligence. Our campaigns are authored by tabletop writers with real pacing, foreshadowing, and payoffs, and the AI Game Master's job is to run that material at your table, not to invent the plot as it goes. Underneath it all is the Dungeons Deep Ruleset, an original game system, compatible with fifth edition, with a dedicated rules engine that enforces combat in code: dice, HP, turn order, and death saves are tracked by the system, so the dice procedure fumbles and dead or alive ambiguity that language model combat produces are not possible in the first place. Campaign memory is managed by the platform rather than by a retrieval window you monitor. We wrote up the full head to head in DungeonsDeep.ai vs Friends and Fables, and the deeper question of what an AI can referee in can AI be a dungeon master.
The honest segmentation: if you want to build your own world and play it with five friends, Friends and Fables is a strong pick today. If you want a crafted campaign with rules that hold up under pressure, solo or with your group, that is what we built DungeonsDeep.ai for.

Yes, multiplayer is its strongest feature. Campaigns support up to 3 players on the free plan and up to 6 on the Legend plan, play works asynchronously across devices, and friends join free under the host's subscription. Note that only the host's credits are spent in multiplayer sessions.
Does Friends and Fables use official D&D rules?

What AI does Friends and Fables use?
Franz, the AI Game Master, runs on a mixture of models depending on the task, including Gemini, Llama, GPT, Grok, and custom fine tuned models. Players can choose between narration models, and premium models cost credits per turn on top of a subscription.
Is Friends and Fables shutting down because of Craft?
No. When the team announced Craft in May 2026, they stated Friends and Fables is not being sunset. Friends and Fables remains the accessible 5e style AI Game Master experience, while Craft is a separate product aimed at players who want deeper control over systems, files, and rules.
Is DungeonsDeep.ai a Friends and Fables alternative?
Yes, with a different design. DungeonsDeep.ai runs human authored campaigns instead of AI generated ones and enforces combat through a dedicated rules engine rather than the language model, with platform managed campaign memory.
