What AI Dungeon Does Well
A fair review has to start with the strengths, and AI Dungeon has real ones.
- Total creative freedom. No imposed genre, no imposed system, no rails. You can pivot a medieval quest into a heist into a ghost story in the same session and the AI will roll with it. This is genuinely hard to beat.

Where AI Dungeon Falls Short
The weak spots are mostly about consistency, structure, pricing clarity, and history.
Memory drift on long stories
Memory is the single most discussed issue in the AI Dungeon community. The platform works on a context window, meaning only a fixed amount of recent text is sent to the AI. When the window fills, the oldest text gets trimmed. AI Dungeon offers tools to fight this, including Story Cards, Plot Essentials, and a Memory Bank, but their own documentation confirms that the oldest story text is trimmed when limits are exceeded.
